What are Behavior Management Services?
Behavior Management Services works with the client, family, and waiver team to identify problematic behaviors and replace them with better coping and/or social skills.
A good behavior clinician will be in the home working closely with the client, so please take time to interview possible clinician’s before starting services. Pick someone with whom the client feels comfortable.
The clinician begins the process by developing a Behavior Support Plan (BSP) and Functional Behavioral Assessment (FBA). These documents analyze problematic behaviors to determine their function (what is the client trying to get or escape) and suggest the best ways to both proactively set up their environment to avoid these behaviors as well as ways to de-escalate the situation quickly when these problematic behaviors happen.
The clinician will meet with the client on a weekly basis to work on building positive coping and social skills so that the client is better equipped to handle strong emotions more appropriately. Skills are taught by playing games, writing social stories, building better emotional vocabulary, processing recent incidents to understand what went wrong, etc. These interventions are tailored to meet client where they are emotionally and developmentally.
What Makes Blooming Therapy Services Unique?
Blooming prides itself on creating positive, long-lasting relationships with our clients. All people thrive on feeling connected and valued with the others in their lives. Building a positive relationship with our clients is crucial to developing a therapeutic environment. When bad days happen, the client will have a trusted friend to support them in making better choices rather than a stranger dictating what they can or cannot do.
Blooming Therapy Services has never really understood the phrase “special needs.” What our clients want is to know that they have a voice and are heard, have purpose and meaning, and are appreciated by those in their home, school/work, and community (and isn’t that what we ALL want?!). When these larger needs are being met, people (not just our clients) are more likely to thrive.
With this in mind, Blooming partners with local organizations to offer two groups aimed at helping clients meet these larger needs.
Blooming partners with FUSE in Greenfield, IN to offer the CIC. This is social group for young adults with an intellectual disability. We meet twice a month to have fun and make friends!
Blooming partners with DSI Services in New Castle, IN to offer Community Hero’s. This is a self-advocacy group that meets monthly to work on leadership and inter-personal skills. We also offer volunteer opportunities to give back to our community as well as educate the community about all the great skills and talents we have.
